ESD

ESD stands for electrostatic discharge: a rapid, often invisible transfer of static electricity between objects at different electrical charges. It is essentially the same phenomenon as the small shock you may feel after walking on carpet and touching a metal handle, but even much smaller discharges can damage sensitive electronics.
